GDS vs Booking Engine vs a Search API

Travelers in a sunlit airport corridor with glass walls and yellow columns

A GDS, a booking engine, and a search API share the same nouns: flights, hotels, fares, availability. They do not share a job. One intermediates and books. One takes the reservation. One returns things you can rank.

This page is the vocabulary. Ktemia is the third row. The HTTP contract stays on the flight search API post. Routes are not live. No invented PNRs.

Key Takeaways

  • Amadeus: a GDS lets sellers search and book; the GDS does not hold inventory.
  • A booking engine is the order path. IATA NDC is offer-and-order XML, not a public Google key.
  • Search is comparison. Terms already say a search is not a reservation.

What is a GDS?

Amadeus’s GDS glossary is plain. A global distribution system (sometimes called a computerised reservation system, or CRS) is a technical intermediary between buyers and sellers of travel content. It connects airlines, hotels, cars, rail, and others to travel agencies and other sellers.

Sellers search schedules, availability, and fares and book through one entry point. The GDS does not hold travel inventory. After a booking, it talks to the provider’s reservation system. Changes and cancellations can go through the GDS too.

That “and book” is the line. If your product never takes payment and never issues a ticket, you are not implementing a GDS. You are standing next to one.

The names in every agency RFP: Amadeus, Sabre, Travelport. Travelport’s older brands (Galileo, Apollo, Worldspan) sit in that family. We are not ranking them. We are not a GDS shop.

Keyword dumps glue gds system, sabre gds, travelport, and computer reservation systems to booking engine and flight search api as if they were synonyms. They are a supply chain. Confusing the chain is how a startup buys a GDS contract to render a compare table.

Self-service Amadeus API access for hobby keys ended 17 July 2026. That access story is Amadeus API vs Skyscanner API. Remaining Amadeus APIs are enterprise. A GDS terminal is still a GDS terminal.

What is a booking engine?

A booking engine is the thing that creates the reservation. On a hotel site it is the rooms-and-pay widget: occupancy, dates, rate, guest, card. On an OTA it is Booking.com Demand API search, look and book, or Expedia Rapid’s shop → price check → booking path. Those are partner booking stacks. They are not a compare UI.

Search can sit in front of a booking engine. Many engines even expose a “shop” call. The shop call is still there to convert. If your screenshot has a “Book” that charges a card, you left search.

Hotel booking engine and online booking are conversion queries. People who type them want a widget that takes money. Ranking this URL as a booking engine would be a bait-and-switch. We will mention the phrase to refuse it.

Ktemia does not sell a hotel contracting system, a PMS, or extra-bed season fields. Those are property ops. Hotel search AI is city and dates to compare stays. Not a front-desk.

What is a search API in that stack?

A search API (here, a flight search API) takes origin, destination, and dates. It returns fares you can rank. It does not return a PNR.

Skyscanner Live Prices is a partner search API with create-and-poll. Kiwi Tequila documents search and a separate booking API. There is no official public Google Flights API. QPX Express shut 10 April 2018.

Ktemia’s contract is POST /v1/flights, three required fields, copilot asks if unclear. Not live. Free: 50 API requests a month. Do not guess LIS. Do not put the key in the browser.

GDS

Intermediary. Search and book. No inventory of its own.

Booking engine

Order, pay, confirmation. Hotel widget or OTA Rapid/Demand.

Search API

Origin, dates in. Comparable offers out. No ticket.

Three jobs. One vocabulary. Only the third is Ktemia.

Where does NDC fit?

IATA describes New Distribution Capability (NDC) as a data-exchange format based on Offer and Order processes, so airlines can retail richer content regardless of channel. It is an XML standard and an industry program. It is open to third parties to implement.

NDC is how some airlines want to shop and order outside classic GDS limitations. It is not a synonym for “JSON search API.” It is not IATA accreditation for a new travel agency. How to get an IATA number is a different SERP and a different lawyer.

If you are shopping NDC, you are shopping airline retailing. If you are shopping Ktemia, you are shopping compare. Do not put NDC offer/order language in our README.

Use the word that matches the job.

GDS vs booking engine vs a search API is a naming problem that becomes a contract problem. If you need a ticket, you need a book path. If you need a front-desk, you need an engine. If you need fares to rank, you need search.

Ktemia is search: product, AI search, flights. Agents: flights MCP. Caps: pricing. Routes are not live. When they are, this page still will not become a GDS brochure.

FAQ

What is a global distribution system (GDS)?

Amadeus’s glossary calls a GDS a technical intermediary between buyers and sellers of travel content. Travel sellers search schedules, availability, and fares, and they can book. The GDS does not hold inventory. Amadeus, Sabre, and Travelport are the names people mean.

What is a booking engine?

A booking engine is the reservation UI or API that takes guest details and payment and creates the order. Hotel booking engines sit on a property site. OTA booking engines sit on Booking.com or Expedia Rapid. Search can feed a booking engine. Search is not the engine.

Is a flight search API a GDS?

No. A flight search API returns comparable fares for origin, destination, and dates. A GDS is an intermediary that also books. Ktemia’s terms treat a search as comparison, not a reservation. The flights route is not live, and a successful search will still not be a ticket.

Do I need IATA certification to use a search API?

IATA certification is an agency accreditation conversation. It is not a search-API signup. GDS booking and NDC order flows have their own commercial gates. Ktemia Free is a dashboard and 50 API requests a month. It is not an IATA number.

What is NDC if it is not a GDS?

IATA describes New Distribution Capability as an XML data-exchange standard for airline offers and orders, so airlines can retail richer content outside the old GDS limitations. NDC is a format and a program. It is not a search-only JSON you open on a Saturday.
